The Dallas Mavericks were one of 14 unlucky teams to pass on Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2013 NBA draft. The Mavs had the No. 13 overall pick in that year’s draft — two picks ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks at No. 15 — which they eventually turned into point guard Shane Larkin after a couple of draft-day deals.

Jason Terry, who spent eight seasons with the Mavs and is now teammates with Antetokounmpo with the Bucks, says the move to pick Larkin instead of the “Greek Freak” was a pretty defensible one back then given the Mavs’ needs and the fact that absolutely no one could’ve seen what Antetokounmpo would turn into. After all, hindsight is 20/20.

Jason Terry was spot on in saying no one could’ve expected Giannis Antetokounmpo blossoming into an absolute superstar back in 2013. While he had tantalizing physical gifts, he was just so raw and easily could’ve turned into one of the many draft busts that did not fulfill all of their potential.

Antetokounmpo's case is just another example of the power of luck in the draft. The Mavs received some of that good fortune when they were able to land Dirk Nowitzki in a trade with the Bucks in 1998. They also had it this year with Dennis Smith Jr., which should at least help lessen the blow of missing out on the Greek Freak in 2013.
