Dallas Mavericks rising star Luka Doncic, who won Rookie of the Year in 2018-19 with the Mavs and is on track to earn his first All-Star nod in 2020, has a fan in Hall of Fame guard and NBA executive Jerry West.

Speaking to Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning-News, West raved about Luka's abilities and admitted the Mavs are lucky to have a 20-year-old star who is barely scratching the surface.

“My goodness, yes,” West replied laughing when asked if Doncic is playing the game right. “Everyone wishes they had a 20-year-old who plays like him, and he hasn’t even scratched the surface.”

“It’s fun to watch genius.”

The so-called “The Logo” then proceeded to call the Mavs youngster not just an All-Star but a superstar-type of player.

“I’ve been around a long time and I’ve seen a lot of special players. How many superstars are there in the league at any given time? Maybe five or six. There’s a difference between All-Stars and superstars,” Jerry West furthered.

“A superstar is different, and that’s what he [Luka Doncic] is.”

Known for his playing days with the Los Angeles Lakers, West now acts as an executive for the Los Angeles Clippers after years working and consulting for the Golden State Warriors.

The Mavs acquired Doncic by trading up in the 2018 NBA Draft to nab the former Real Madrid EuroLeague guard with the third overall pick, sending Trae Young and a future first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks. Both players are performing quite well in 2019-20, and both Doncic and Young might make the All-Star Game in the West and East, respectively.

West has long been a force in the NBA, first as an All-Star player and a champion, then a coach, and (since the 1980s) a powerful executive who has whispered the right words into championship-caliber players and coaches' ears. Perhaps Doncic is the next player to receive West's blessing.
