The Dallas Mavericks have been up-and-down this 2021-22 season. While they have had some great wins, there have also been utterly bad performances. However, Kristaps Porzingis claims that things are about to change as his partnership with Luka Doncic improves.
Speaking to reporters after the Mavs' Monday practice, Porzingis gave his insights on their rather rough start and his partnership with Doncic that is still a work in progress. The Latvian big man admitted they have been far from perfect, but he expressed his belief that they could break out really soon with the way things are going.
When will that breakout be? Well, KP thinks Christmas time or right after it is when they'll be able to unleash their full potential.
“It’s a new year for us and we haven’t really got that good rhythm—not yet. Before the season, I kind of knew we were going to need some time with some of the changes we’ve had. So I was thinking, you know, around Christmas time, after Christmas is really when we’re going to take off,” the Mavs big man said of his connection with Doncic, per Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News.
“We’ve had some injuries. We’ve been a little bit up and down. We're good at some moments, not so good at some others. I think once we really find that consistency in our play and kind of, like, become more solid as a team, then I think that’s when we're going to start taking it to the next level.”
The Mavs have a Christmas Day game scheduled against the Utah Jazz, and if what Kristaps Porzingis said is true, it would certainly be the perfect holiday gift for Dallas fans who have been increasingly frustrated with their recent slump.
Of course it's hard to really say when KP, Luka Doncic and the Mavs can hit their stride. It's something that no one can really predict. Nonetheless, it is undoubtedly a positive sign that Porzingis is working diligently to really connect with Luka and develop that one-two punch that the team has always envisioned when they bring him in.
The Mavs are 11-11 on the season, good for sixth place in the tough Western Conference. However, one more loss would see them slip out of the Top 8 amid a tight playoff race.
It is still too early for Dallas fans to worry about the team's slump, but it will sure ease all the concerns if the team can get things rolling sooner rather than later. Hopefully, there will indeed be a Christmas gift for everyone as KP claimed.
