The Dallas Mavericks had to make a game-time decision on superstar Luka Doncic after Doncic suffered an ankle sprain in Game 3 of the team's first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers. But while Doncic is playing, Mavs big man Kristaps Porzingis is out for Sunday's crucial Game 4 with right knee soreness.

The Mavs will have their work cut out with a gimpy Doncic and no Porzingis as they attempt to tie the series at two games apiece.

Porzingis' absence marks yet another strange twist in this series, which has been especially odd for the big man.

The 7-footer was ejected from Game 1 after receiving a pair of controversial technical fouls, and the Clippers pulled out a tight victory.

Porzingis played a major role in the Mavs' Game 2 victory, scoring 23 points to go along with seven rebounds. He was even better in Game 3, scoring 34 points on 11-for-18 shooting and also pulling down 13 rebounds, though Dallas lost.

It remains to be seen how Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle will adjust to Kristaps Porzingis' absence. The big man's ability to be a pick-and-pop threat opened up driving lanes for Doncic, who has excelled at getting into the paint in this series.

Carlisle might be inclined to give even more time to Maxi Kleber, given he has a similar skill set to Porzingis. Perhaps Boban Marjanovic can provide some size and rim protection down low.

Regardless, the Mavs will need a strong bench performance as they hope to get back on even terms.
