While Dallas Mavericks wing Luka Doncic is off to an All-Star-worthy 2019-20 season—possibly even in the early MVP conversation—the 20-year-old Slovenian prodigy never expected himself to be “this good.”

Speaking to The Athletic's Shams Charania in Stadium, Doncic said “I knew I was going to be good, but not that good for sure. I didn’t expect that.”

“I mean honestly, I had faith. I knew I was going to be good, but not that good, for sure. I didn't know I was going to play like this. I didn't expect that. I'm happy to play like this.”

Doncic is off to a record-breaking fast start, including recording multiple 30-point triple-doubles for the Mavs. He's averaging 29.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 9.4 assists in 34.3 minutes per game for Dallas, shooting 48.6% from the field, 33.6% from 3-point range, and 81.5% from the free throw line.

The Mavs are 9-5 and host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. The Western Conference franchise is mostly powered through Doncic's virtuoso on offense, with head coach Rick Carlisle embracing last season's Rookie of the Year.

Three-time Warriors champion head coach Steve Kerr joked yesterday how unimpressive Doncic has been following the Mavs' 40-point win over Golden State (via Mavs.com's Eddie Sefko):

Also from Steve Kerr, re: Luka Doncic: “He was awful. He didn't impress me at all. No, he was fantastic. Right from the beginning of the game, he was doing his thing . . . he took it to us.” As for what he takes from a game like this? “Flush it down the toilet,” he said.

Doncic continues to scorch through the history books and set himself up as the next best player in the NBA.
