Dallas Mavericks second-year man Luka Doncic has recently announced his intention to represent his home nation of Slovenia for the upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2020.

According to Doncic himself, while his focus remains with the Mavs, he is still very much willing to play for his country's national side as they continue to pin their hopes on a potential appearance in the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

“The goal here is for the Mavericks to make the playoffs” said Doncic referring to his main NBA target, also confirmed he plans to suit up for Slovenia in the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, via John Askounis of Eurohoops.net “I will play, so hopefully we will advance.”

The highly-anticipated international tournament is scheduled to take place from June 23 to 28 in 2020. The NBA Finals would have already been completed at that point, and by then, the league would have already crowned the 2020 NBA Champions. Even if the Mavs go all the way to the Finals — something that may be a bit improbable at this point, but is surely a goal that Doncic and company have set their minds to — then there would be no schedule conflict for fast-rising sophomore star.

Doncic and the Mavs are coming off a 106-103 defeat against the New York Knicks on Thursday. Doncic could not be faulted for his heroic effort, though, with the 20-year-old going off for 33 points (on 10-of-23 from the field, 10-of-13 from the line), three 3-pointers, 10 rebounds, 11 assists, three steals, a block, and three turnovers in 36 minutes of play.
