Luka Doncic carried the Dallas Mavericks to as far as they could go. But to get to the NBA mountaintop, he still has a ways to go.

Following the Mavs' Game 5 elimination against the Golden State Warriors, Luka Doncic spoke out on what he has to do to be able to put more weight on his superstar shoulders.

Via ESPN:

“I think defense has got to be way better for me,” said the Mavs star, who was frequently targeted by playoff opponents. “Honestly, I think I made a huge step this year defensively, but there's so much room for improvement. I've got to be way better there. I think that's one spot that can take us to the next level.”

It's no marvel concept that teams would target an opponent's best player on defense. They did the exact same thing to Stephen Curry. But if Luka Doncic can minimize his negative impact on that end, Dallas becomes that much more dangerous.

But regardless of the result, Doncic is still proud of what his Mavs were able to accomplish

“If we talk about our season, I'm really proud of this team — everybody, every player, every staff member,” Doncic said. “Nobody had us here. But I promise we fought until the end. Congratulations to Warriors. They were obviously the better team. But I'm really proud of this team.”

If Luka Doncic can come into the new season in tip-top shape and the Mavs can add a few more pieces around him, they could very well get back to this stage next season.
