Luka Doncic is phenomenal. There's no other way to say it; the Dallas Mavericks star has been one of the best players in the league already. Despite still being a “young” player, Doncic has quickly cemented his spot amongst the game's best players today. It's clear that he's on the path to basketball greatness.

On Friday night, Doncic once again proved why he's one of the best players in the league today. Despite the Mavs loss, the Slovenian still put on an incredible show. He scored 42 points and dished out 8 assists in the Game 2 loss (despite reportedly battling an illness the night before). That 40-point game was the 7th in his young career, putting him right behind a certain Lakers legend. (via ESPN Stats and Info)

We haven't seen a young player like Luka Doncic take over the league this early in his career since, well, LeBron James. It's oddly fitting that the Mavs star is one 40-point game away from snatching this record by LeBron James. It's a testament to just how insane Doncic has been in the playoffs during his career.

The crazy thing is that we might see Doncic shatter this LeBron record in this postseason alone. The Mavs have badly needed Doncic to be his game-breaking self all season long. Without this 42-point game, for example, they would've likely struggled mightily against the Warriors in Game 2.

The Mavs are now heading back home facing a massive 0-2 deficit against the Warriors. If they want any shot at making it to the Finals, they need to find a way to contain the Dubs' potent offense.
