For Luka Doncic and Rick Carlisle, the goal for the Dallas Mavericks this 2019-20 season is to make the playoffs. Per Mavs reporter Dwain Price, the head coach and the sophomore star shared the team's goals ahead of opening night. For Carlisle, he aims to head back to playoff contention after missing the last three.

“We’re approaching today in a way to be the best team that we can be. We've got to play process-oriented. One of our goals is to become a playoff team after a three-year hiatus. But we're very much more focused on the process than any particular long-term goal.”

Doncic, for his part, acknowledged that the Mavs are better with not just Kristaps Porzingis on the fold, but other players as well — both old and new additions.

“I would say, team-wise, we’ve got a better team. We’ve got (Kristaps Porzingis), we've got a bunch of players who can do a lot of things. For me, team-wise, I want to make the playoffs.”

From the looks of it, the Mavs are taking it step by step. The ultimate goal is to win the title. But the Mavs are aware that becoming a contender involves a long and tedious process. They have to take it one possession, one game, and one season at a time.
