Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic believes that becoming the Sports Illustrated's “Breakout Star of the Year” is something special that inspires him to do even better.

“When I heard about it I was happy, it was something special,” the Mavs star told DallasBasketball.com. “I appreciate everyone from ‘Sports Illustrated' awarding that to me. It’s something that motivates me and I want to keep it going.”

Doncic's response to such awards is usually distant and nonchalant. Yet, given the rich history and reputation of the sports publication, the 20-year-old could not help contain his feelings. After all, Sports Illustrated selects their Breakout Star of the Year from different sports, not just basketball.

Other awardees include New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, and Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor. To be heralded by a legendary publication as a breakout star means that you are the next big thing and probably the next face of an entire sport.

It's another award vested in the hands of the Slovenian sensation. The NBA is nowhere near the midpoint of the 2019-20 season, yet Doncic is already filling up his trophy case to the brim.

Once the regular season wraps up, will Luka Doncic create a special place for an NBA MVP Trophy — the silverware that many believe he could win?
