Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic promises that his free throw shooting percentage will get better as the season progresses. After the Mavs' preseason game against the Detroit Pistons, Doncic shared how he motivates himself for the free-throw line. Since he converts on the most difficult shots, draining a free throw should be easier.

“I always say to myself, ‘I can’t make a normal shot. I always make the shots that I wasn’t supposed to make,’ ” Doncic said, per Brad Townsend of Dallas News. “So I’ve got to work on that, for sure.”

But Doncic, who went 5-for-10 from the free-throw line, wasn't just referring to the charity stripe. He's still a bit rusty after several months of inaction.

“Yeah, everything,” he said. “I missed like, I don’t know, three, four layups. I missed free-throws. I missed open threes. So it’s going to get better, for sure.”

In his rookie year, the Slovenian shot 71.3 percent from the free-throw line. He took 6.7 free throw attempts per game which ranked 10th in the league. Among those in the top 10, only three players shot below 75 percent: Giannis Antetokounmpo (72.9), Doncic (71.3) and LeBron James (66.5).

As such, he will need to bump up his shooting percentage. As he gains more knowledge of the game, opposing teams and defenders will gain more knowledge about his tendencies. He will get fouled more often than not. And he needs to convert on those free throws.
