During an interview with a local radio station 105.3 The Fan, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban opened up about what the future holds for Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki. He mentioned that the current season, which is Dirk’s 21st in the league, feels like his last. When asked about the possibility of Dirk working with the franchise after his playing days are behind him, Cuban had this to say:

“We haven't discussed it. He's trying to decide if he's going to take some time off or not,” Cuban said. “But he can do whatever he wants. He's earned it. I don't care. Whatever he wants to do, Dirk can do … the answer's yes.”

It looks like any position Nowitzki would like to occupy within the Mavericks organization is up for grabs. It is no surprise, though, as Dirk is a fan favorite and likely the greatest player in the franchise’s history. Not only has he played for the Mavs his entire 21-year NBA career, he helped bring the franchise it’s first and only title back in 2011 against the Miami Heat’s new trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh in their first season together.

At 40 years old, his role with the team on the court is much smaller than it used to be, but Dirk will hold a special place in basketball history as one of the pioneers of the deep-threat big man. So far in his career, he is averaging 21.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists per game and shooting 38.2 percent from deep. With the team having recently acquired Kristaps Porzingis, Nowitzki can expect to be plenty welcomed around the team, whether on the roster or not, to act as a mentor for the young 7-foot-3 European big.
