The Dallas Mavericks were rumored as one of the front runners to sign free agent forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Now, it appears the deal has finally come to fruition for the Mavs.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Kidd-Gilchrist has agreed to sign with the Mavs for the remainder of the 2019-20 NBA season.

ESPN's Tim McMahon added that Dallas will need to waive one player on their roster in order to make it official.

The Mavs had reportedly been interested in acquiring Kidd-Gilchrist prior to the Feb. 6 trade deadline. Fortunately, the Charlotte Hornets' decision to waive him has allowed them to swoop in and sign him without giving anything up.

Kidd-Gilchrist was in his eighth season with the Hornets after being taken with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. Unfortunately, he has once again struggled to find his footing while dealing with knee and calf injuries. As a result, he has only averaged 4.0 points and 2.9 rebounds in 12 games this year.

Dallas has managed to work their way into the playoff picture in the Western Conference heading into the All-Star break. It its clear that they are now doing whatever they can to make sure they stay there.

There were rumors that the Mavs were hoping to fortify things on the defensive end, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist can certainly oblige by providing some depth on the perimeter. Nonetheless, it does not appear as though he will be able to provide much on offense.

Perhaps the change of scenery could be just what the 26-year-old needs to get his career back on track.
