Dallas Mavericks small forward Wes Matthews will likely be out for the remainder of the year with a fractured right fibula, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

The veteran underwent further testing today and will rest and rehabilitate the injury, likely being shut down for the season with not much to play for other than a lottery pick.

Matthews has struggled shooting the ball throughout the season, making barely 40 percent of his attempts from the field and 38 percent from deep. His defensive traits have also seen a decline, hauling in a mere 3.1 rebounds and snatching only 1.2 steals per game as the Mavs' most recognized two-way player.

The Mavericks are in the running for one of the worse records in the league, already eliminated from playoff contention with a futile 21-46 record, having gone 3-7 in their last 10 games.

Matthews returning this season would make zero sense for a team that has shifted its focus to developing their young players and getting as close to a lottery pick as possible, currently tied for the fifth-worst record in the league.
