Jalen Brunson is widely expected to join the New York Knicks this offseason, after the two sides reportedly agreed to a four-year, $110 million deal ahead of free agency. With Brunson leaving town, rumors emerged that the Dallas Mavericks could become players in the Kyrie Irving trade market, which was given new life after Kevin Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, his sources have “widely dismissed” the possibility of the Mavs pursuing Irving via trade this offseason.

Now that Durant has requested a trade, it's believed the Nets could look to offload Irving as well. It would stand to reason that the Mavs may have some level of interest after losing their own starting point guard, but Stein insists that Dallas has no intentions of moving for Irving.

Irving opted into the final year of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. He's due to make $36.5 million in 2022-23 before hitting unrestricted free agency next offseason. The initial expectation was that he and Durant, along with Ben Simmons, would remain in Brooklyn for this season, but after Durant's trade request, those plans have been thrown to the wayside.

Brunson leaving for the Knicks is a big blow for the Mavs, especially given he reportedly didn't even give Dallas the chance to submit an offer before declaring for New York. While the Mavs may well be in the market for a point guard to fill his void, it doesn't seem likely that Irving is under consideration for the squad, however enticing the pairing of him and Luka Doncic may be.
