The Dallas Mavericks could enter the Klay Thompson sweepstakes alongside the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers if the Golden State Warriors swingman is offered a four-year deal instead of a five-year max, according to Mike Fisher of 247Sports.

The Mavs have been linked to plenty of free agents, but the organization has self-admittedly only dipped their toes in the free-agency pool, still hesitant to swim across to the other side and make players a priority due to the fickle nature of this summer.

Thompson is considered a near-lock to return to the Warriors, a team he has spent his whole eight-year career with. But reports have been clear throughout the season that the marksman will not give out any discount after taking considerably less in his last contract.

The Warriors have been forthcoming and said they plan to offer him and Kevin Durant the max. But until that factually happens, teams like the Clippers, Lakers and now the Mavs will lurk in the background if Thompson is forced to venture into different waters.

Dallas is hoping to upgrade its backcourt, looking at players like Kemba Walker, Malcolm Brogdon and Khris Middleton, but Walker seems destined for Boston while Brogdon and Middleton are likely to wind up back in Milwaukee.

The Mavs have also surveyed a third tier of free agents like the rugged Patrick Beverley, who is expected to give them a meeting while seeking a three-year, $40-plus million offer.

While getting Thompson is unlikely at this point, it's smart of the Mavs to float their name out there, as there's no door that can be entered before there's a knock on it first.
