The Dallas Mavericks may look to be major players at the trade deadline this February, and it appears they know who they're after.

The Mavericks have made no bones about trying to get Los Angeles Lakers forward Julius Randle in some way, per Mike Fisher of DallasBasketball.com.

After this weekend, it's sort of become a foregone conclusion to some: The Mavs want to attach themselves to DFW native Julius Randle of the Lakers. In trade. Free agency. Something. David Lord and I have been working on this story for a couple of days. Look for it on Tuesday afternoon, exclusively on DallasBasketball.com.

After this season, Randle will become a restricted free agent, meaning if Randle is signed to an offer sheet by another team, the Lakers have the power to match it or let Randle leave. Randle this season has been a bit up and down, but has played well since he moved into the starting line a couple of weeks ago.

In order to get Randle at the deadline, the Mavericks will have to give up some assets to make the trade work. Nerlens Noel is a player who has appeared in some trade talks, and the Mavericks also have the likes of Yogi Ferrell, Dennis Smith. Jr and Harrison Barnes, should they want to move any of those.

But the Lakers may not want any of those players. They have plenty of big men, and they're only real need is a backup point guard to help out when Lonzo Ball sits.

The Lakers and Mavericks may be better suited waiting for free agency. That way, the Lakers don't have to match an offer sheet and they don't have to take back any salary.
