When you think of NBA competitiveness, the Dallas Mavericks are probably not one of the teams that first come into your mind.

The Mavs have not been very relevant since they won the championship in 2011. But they do have some promising acquisitions in Harrison Barnes, Yogi Ferrell, and Dennis Smith Jr. However, they will need all the help they could get as Dirk Nowitzki is getting nearer to retiring.

The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching, and it's easy to believe that the Mavs will not be able to do anything significant. After all, they are not exactly in the best position to make great moves before the trade deadline.

But the Mavs may be thinking long term. According to a report by Eddie Sefko of SportsDay, the team is looking to take in salary for assets.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban said:

“I would say we are looking to use our cap space actively. We will take back salary to get picks or guys we think can play.”

As of now, the Mavs have the second lowest payroll in the league, with the Chicago Bulls having the cheapest total. The Mavs have about $13 million dollars in salary-cap space for this season. They have attractive assets in Wes Matthews and even Nerlens Noel who they can dangle to contenders for the right price.

This can be very advantageous. They can take in players from teams who need to dump some salaries, in exchange for assets such as a future pick or a young player.
