The Dallas Mavericks are in real danger of losing Jalen Brunson to the New York Knicks without getting anything in return, and if they want to keep him, they have to pay BIG.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the only way the Mavs can keep Brunson is by matching the Knicks' projected offer for the playmaker. The ‘Bockers are expected to give the 25-year-old a four-year, $100 million deal–with some reports even stating it could go as high as $110 million.

As for the Mavs, they will reportedly need to give Brunson the same annual salary plus a fifth year for a $125 million deal.

Per Haynes: It would likely take somewhere close to a five-year, $125 million commitment from the Mavericks to prevent Brunson from signing with the Knicks, sources said.

For what it's worth, that is something the Mavs are reportedly not keen on doing. As mentioned previously, Dallas' price point for Jalen Brunson is on the $22 million range–close to the deal that Fred VanVleet signed with the Toronto Raptors in 2020.

Haynes furthered that the Mavs initially wanted to give Brunson a five-year deal at the $106 million range. Clearly, the Knicks are set to out-money them for Luka Doncic's runningmate.

It remains to be seen what the Mavs will do with the Brunson situation, though the Miami Heat have also emerged as a dark horse candidate to sign Brunson. If the South Beach franchise reaches a deal with Brunson, they would need Dallas' help to facilitate a sign-and-trade.
