Even before he got drafted by the Dallas Mavericks last June, Dennis Smith Jr. already turned a lot of heads for his high-flying ways back in his days with North Caroline State. Such aerial exploits have the Mavs rookie drawing comparisons with some of the best point guards in the NBA today like Russell Westbrook and John Wall.

Smith has already had some highlight reel-worthy plays this season, and he added another one on Monday versus the Washington Wizards. After receiving the ball off a good outlet pass, he found himself alone for the fastbreak. The 20-year-old Mavs guard brought fans to their feet as he threw down a 360-dunk, which he did with a lot of ease, to the amusement of many.

That impressive play from Smith signaled the start of a very good night for the Mavs as they were able to complete the upset against one of the top teams in Eastern Conference by winning in a blowout, 98-75. They played excellent defense all night long which frustrated the Wizards, who only shot 30.6 percent from the field, with just two players finishing in double digits in scoring.

The Mavs may not be heading to the playoffs this year, but for what it’s worth, Smith has lived up to expectations, proving that he is going to be a cornerstone of the team in the years to come. He may very well receive an invite for the Slam Dunk contest and represent the Mavs who will most likely not have an All-Star this season.
