Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting rookies in the 2018-19 NBA season. Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert got a firsthand look at why there was so much hype surrounding the Mavs phenom.

Gobert is unquestionably one of the NBA’s premier defenders. However, Luka Doncic made him look like the rookie with a fake pass off the rebound.

Upon further review, it is clear that Luka Doncic could have easily been called for traveling. Fortunately for him, the referees did not pick up on it and he was able to make one of the best pays of the night. Regardless, there is no denying that the rookie has marvelous control of the ball.

Although Rudy Gobert has shown to be extremely vulnerable to great ball-handlers, Doncic deserves props for getting the better of the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. He finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists. He was also a force on the defensive end with two steals and a block. More importantly, the Mavs were able to keep their win streak going with a dominant 50-point victory over Utah.

It is no secret Luka Doncic has gotten off to a stellar start in Dallas. He is currently averaging a team-leading 19.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists through the first 13 games. Although it is still early in the year, it is clear he has taken on an integral role in the Mavs’ approach as his 34.2 minutes per game are also a team-high. With plays like these, he will likely only take on an expanded role as he gets more comfortable.
