Former Dallas Mavericks guard Monta Ellis was spotted on Tuesday playing pick-up hoops with current Mavs players Luka Doncic, Justin Jackson and rookie Isaiah Roby.

Ellis has been away from the NBA since 2017 and is currently a free agent. He last played for the Indiana Pacers, who waived him in the summer of 2017. Ellis was the league's Most Improved Player during the 2006-07 season and spent two seasons in the backcourt for the Mavs from 2013 to 2015 before moving to Indiana.

The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 19.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game in 162 appearances for Dallas, shooting 44.8 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from behind the 3-point arc and 77.4 percent from the free throw line.

Ellis is currently attempting an NBA comeback. He recently paired with Amar'e Stoudemire, working out in front of NBA scouts last month.

Whether Ellis' Association comeback is successful or not remains to be seen, though. The undersized two-guard is not known for outside shooting, as he is more known as a lethal isolation player who is spotting up from the mid-range. Ellis' style of playe certainly differs from what many organizations around the NBA seek at his position, especially with the increasing emphasis on the 3-pointer.

Concerning the Mavs, though, the Western Conference franchise does not have an open roster spot. They currently carry 15 players and a pair of two-way players in guards Antonius Cleveland and Josh Reaves. Dallas would have to waive one player before considering signing the veteran guard in Ellis.
