The New York Mets have managed to survive in the NL East and hold onto the top spot while star pitchers Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom have been shelved with injuries. With both starters nearing their return, the excitement is building up in Queens. deGrom made a rehab start at Class-A St. Lucie on Sunday, and while it was a low-level minor-league rehab appearance, it's safe to say that the 34-year-old looked ready to return to the big leagues. deGrom topped 100 MPH on his fastball in the outing, during which he pitched 1.2 innings and struck out five of the six batters he faced, per Deesha Thosar of the NY Daily News.

deGrom threw a total of 24 pitches in his rehab start and took little time to rack up the strikeouts, finishing his outing with five punchouts. Mets fans will absolutely love to hear the latest update on their superstar starter, who has missed the entire season thus far while dealing with a shoulder injury.

With his return now imminent, his rehab start was a smashing success, setting him up for another appearance in the near future, during which he'll likely get the green light to pitch deeper into the game.

Speaking after the game, deGrom revealed that he felt great in his outing and that his shoulder feels “100 percent,” which is precisely what Mets fans wanted to hear.

deGrom hit the IL ahead of the regular season after sustaining a shoulder injury. He was later transferred to the 60-day IL, from which he's now working his way back. A return ahead of the All-Star break still feels like a stretch for deGrom, but his dominance in St. Lucie bodes well for his impending return to MLB action.
