Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marcus Stroman is indeed heading to New York…to be a member of the New York Mets.

Stroman had been drawing a tremendous amount of interest from teams around the league, but MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports that Brodie Van Wagenen and the Mets are the team that made the most impressive offer to the Blue Jays.

The Mets had been regarded as candidates to sell heading into Wednesday's deadline, especially after they had openly spoken about trading both Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard.

With Stroman heading to New York, some wondered whether or not Syndergaard's departure was imminent. However, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic have indicated that an agreement has yet to be reached with respect to Syndergaard.

Stroman had previously been thought to be a top target of the Yankees, as a ground ball pitcher with a 2.96 ERA in 21 starts. Instead of heading to the Bronx, Stroman is on his way to Queens.

The Mets' acquisition of Stroman is not only confusing because of their aforementioned “seller” status leading up to the deadline, but also because of the similarities that he shares with Syndergaard with respect to team control. In fact, Stroman only has one year of arbitration left, whilst Syndergaard still has two years.

Perhaps the Mets have completely scrapped the idea of trading their young pitchers, or Syndergaard at the very least. New York may still look to move Zack Wheeler, given that he will be an unrestricted free agent next season.

However, it is possible that Van Wagenen believes that Stroman's acquisition could better position the Mets to be winners next year. He has been notoriously aggressive in his first year as general manager, taking on the contract of Robinson Cano and nabbing Edwin Diaz while sending the team's top two prospects to the Seattle Mariners.

That move has backfired, but time will tell what exactly Van Wagenen and the Mets might have in mind before the deadline passes.
