The Mets initially had Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer lined up to pitch games 1 and 2 of the 2022 MLB season. Scherzer will still pitch the second game, but the Mets announced a surprise Opening Day starter on Wednesday. Tylor Megill, who wasn't even projected to be in the Mets five man rotation following the Chris Bassitt trade, will start Opening day for the New York Mets following the recent deGrom and Scherzer updates.

The news is unquestionably surprising. But Megill did flash signs of potential last season despite finishing with a 4.52 ERA. Opposing batters hit just .255 against him and he walked only 7.1 percent of hitters he faced in 2021. Megill certainly is far from dominant, but he could produce a solid campaign in 2022.

Jacob deGrom is expected to be out until June with a shoulder injury. He is the ace of the staff and was looking to set the tone for the season with a strong start to the year, but that will not be possible following the injury news.

Fortunately, Max Scherzer appears to have avoided any kind of serious ailment and is expected to start New York's second game of the season. Scherzer would have been the obvious replacement candidate for Opening Day but the Mets opted to give him one extra day of rest.

Tylor Megill will look to post a productive outing against the Nationals in Washington to open the season. The Nats don't feature the best lineup but Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz are extremely dangerous hitters. If Megill can contain their prowess he should fare well.
