New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes did not play at all this past season due to heel and ankle problems, and the Mets aren't sure when he will be back on the field.

“At this point, Ces is rehabbing and we’ll evaluate his health and we’ll evaluate his performance as we get closer to spring training,” said Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, per Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports. “I don’t have enough information to predict when he’s going to be back.”

Ironically enough, Van Wagenen was Cespedes' agent when New York worked out a four-year, $110 million contract to re-sign Cespedes in November 2016.

He added that it's “too early to tell” if Cespedes will play in 2020.

Given that Cespedes, who last played in July 2018, is scheduled to make $29.5 million next season, that is obviously not news that Mets fans want to hear, as New York has plenty of holes on its roster and seems reluctant to spend as it is.

Injuries are nothing new for Cespedes.

Since 2017, he has played in just 119 games, and he also missed 30 games in 2016, a season in which he slashed .280/.354/.530 with 31 home runs and 86 RBI, en route to an All-Star appearance.

The Mets initially acquired Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers at the 2015 trade deadline. He had a torrid stretch with the club over the final couple of months of 2018, helping New York reach the World Series for the first time since 2000.

However, since then, Cespedes' tenure with the Mets has been nothing short of a disaster, and he is still on the books for two more years.
