It was a wild year for the Miami Dolphins. After falling way behind in the rankings, they somehow found a way to be in playoff contention late in the season. Now, with a new head coach, the franchise hopes to make drastic improvements moving forward. For that reason, we take a look at a potential surprise Dolphins roster cut in the 2022 offseason.

Defensively, Miami has a lot of promise. It would be extremely shocking to see the front office release anyone of value to the team. The defense is the strongest asset for the Dolphins and they should consider keeping that side of the ball intact. On the other hand, the offense could use some improvement. We could see someone who played a vital role on the offense receive the ax this year.

The Dolphins will make their decision based on two areas, contract situation, and past production. We'll see how makes the final roster by the end of the offseason, but there is reason to believe Miami lets a running back go. Although Mike McDaniel is a running scheme guru, the new head coach might have a different running back option up his sleeve.

With that said, here is our surprise Dolphins roster cut heading into the 2022 offseason.

Surprise Dolphins Roster Cut in 2022 Offseason

Myles Gaskin

This would be a shocking decision for Miami to make. Myles Gaskin has been rather decent throughout his career but has dealt with injuries in the past. He's the best running back on the roster currently, and having McDaniel take over as head coach could unlock Gaskin's potential. Unfortunately, it may not work out that way, as the Dolphins could have other ideas in mind.

First, Miami has a plethora of holes to fill on the offense. The entire offensive line needs an upgrade, while the receiving core needs improvement as well. Running back might be near the bottom of priorities for the Dolphins, but we could see Mike McDaniel search for an upgrade in that position in the offseason.

The Dolphins could search for a better running back in free agency, as a few running back options stand out. Melvin Gordon has proven to be a reliable rusher out of the backfield who could provide Miami with consistency. Other potential options are Leonard Fournette, Ronald Jones, or even Cordarrelle Patterson. Although these guys are all a bit older, they have the tools necessary to be a threat for this offense.

It's hard to imagine the Dolphins using an early pick to take a running back, especially considering they have much bigger needs. For that reason, we could see Miami attempt to trade for a better running back. There is already speculation of the New York Giants potentially trading Saquon Barkley, while the Cleveland Browns could choose to deal Kareem Hunt. Both of these guys are better than Myles Gaskin and give Miami a solid running back out of the backfield.

If the Dolphins were to release Myles Gaskin, they would only be given about a $2.5 million cap hit. Additionally, Miami would not be punished in the dead cap, as it would be a measly $21,695. Financially, cutting Gaskin makes sense, as the front office could use that money for a bigger area of need. For that reason, we could see this franchise let Myles Gaskin walk in the 2022 offseason.
