An angry fan attempted and failed to attack the founders of miHoYo (Genshin Impact) this Saturday, April 24. Police were able to arrest the fan and take him away, with the targets not getting hurt.

Disgruntled fan attacks Genshin Impact executives because of cancelled Honkai Impact content

Police arrested a man in Shanghai because of an attempt on the lives of miHoYo's founders. They caught the man near the miHoYo HQ in Shanghai, China, with his targets escaping unhurt.

The assailant belongs to a community of gamers who did not take kindly to miHoYo's planned content for their other game, Honkai Impact. While not as popular as the hit Genshin ImpactHonkai Impact still has a lot of fans, especially in China.

The content in question would have introduced bunny suits for some characters in the game, reports Daniel Ahmad. This dissatisfied Chinese fans in two ways. First, they resented that the content will only come to the Global version of the game, not the Chinese one. Second, they thought that this content disrespects the characters, and in effect, China.

Because of the negative feedback they received, miHoYo decided to cancel the bunny suits content for Honkai Impact. To apologize, they also gave in-game credits to all players as a form of compensation. The Genshin Impact developers made these pronouncements two days before the attack.

Meanwhile, this decision didn't sit well for miHoYo's international fans. Many fans argued that bunny outfits for characters in anime games are fair game. They pointed out that many other games have similar content, and should not be seen as inappropriate.

It seems like regardless of what miHoYo decides to do in response to this issue, there will be unhappy fans. But since the Chinese gaming market leads everyone else in terms of revenue by region, it makes sense that miHoYo will prioritize Chinese fans. Besides, the Chinese fans are closer to home.
