Free agent big man Mike Muscala will not be leaving Atlanta as he has re-signed with the Hawks to remain with the franchise.

The development was announced by the team on Tuesday, as the 26-year-old Bucknell product formally signed his new contract in the afternoon. Details of the new deal were not disclosed per team policy.

Muscala has spent the last four years with the Hawks and is coming off his best season as a pro with career-high averages of 6.3 points, including 50.4 percent shooting from the field, to go along with 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17.7 minutes per game.

The team’s general manager, Travis Scheink, gave a statement via Hawks.com, and expressed his delight in seeing Muscala agree to a new contract.

“Mike is a valuable player for us and a great fit both on and off the floor. He’s worked hard and improved each year, and we’re very happy he’ll continue his career with the Hawks.”

With Dwight Howard now with the Charlotte Hornets, Muscala will have the opportunity to compete for a starting role, and could be in line for more playing time next season. If he can continue showing improvement in his game, he could turn out to be one of the more important signings for the Hawks this summer, and establish himself as more than just a serviceable big man.
