The Tennessee Titans announced that they had decided to bench Marcus Mariota for their Week 7 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.

After Wednesday's practice, head coach Mike Vrabel explained why he decided to start Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Vrabel mentioned that he is ‘not ruling anything out' when it comes to Mariota being able to earn his job back and the decision was made ‘for this week.'

“I wouldn't rule anything out. This is the decision that we made for this week,” Vrabel said, via Erik Bacharach of the Tennessean. “We're going to need Marcus in some form or fashion throughout the season, but I think the most important thing is this week.”

The Titans decided to bench Mariota during the third quarter of their 16-0 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The performance that he was providing was underwhelming as he went 7-of-18 on his passes for just 63 yards. After the game, Mariota that he was ‘inaccurate' and that he needed to do a ‘better job.'

“I was inaccurate today, and I didn't give our guys a chance to make plays,” Mariota said, via Turron Davenport of ESPN. “It starts with me. I need to do a better job. Not being able to convert third downs, complete passes and get into a rhythm, it's on me.”

Mariota has gone 94-of-159 (59.1 percent) on his throws for 1,179 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions for the Titans so far this season. The main issue is that he combined for 542 yards and six touchdowns in his top two performances and has underwhelmed in his other starts.
