The Minnesota Vikings didn't win the NFC North during the 2019 NFL season, but they still made some noise during the playoffs. During Wild Card weekend, the Vikings went into New Orleans and beat the Saints, before being knocked off the following week by San Francisco 49ers.
During the offseason, the Vikings made some significant changes because of cap space, and there are still some major holes that need to be addressed heading into the 2020 season.
The defensive line is going to look at lot different in 2020. Gone is Linval Joseph, and Everson Griffen hasn't been re-signed yet, but there is still a chance they could bring him back.
The Vikings traded away Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills. Diggs is a special talent, but it was clear that he and the Vikings weren't working out, so the team really had no choice but to move on from him. The Vikings did draft Justin Jefferson out of LSU in hopes that he can replace Diggs. Adam Thielen is still on the team, and Jefferson is going to need to have a big season; otherwise, wide receiver is going to be a weakness.
The offensive line also doesn't have a whole lot of depth, and some might argue they could use an upgrade, but as long as there are no injuries, they should be fine.
What To Do About The Secondary?
The biggest turnovers this offseason happened with the Vikings secondary. Gone are Trae Waynes, Mackensie Alexander, and Xavier Rhodes from last year's squad. Even though Rhodes clearly had lost a step during 2019, Waynes and Alexander being gone is a big loss.
Mike Hughes has shown flashes of being a starting cornerback, but he has dealt with injuries. Holton Hill was also strong in 2019 when he was on the field, but he has dealt with failed drug tests in the past. Kris Boyd was drafted late during the 2019 draft, and Zimmer has done a good job of developing him, but is he ready to become a starter in 2020? That is a big question mark. The team also drafted Jeff Gladney in the first round and trusting a cornerback as a rookie can be a scary thing. This group very well could find success in 2020, but bringing in a veteran to help in the locker room and be a fill-in starter if needed, would be a great addition to a team. Logan Ryan is a free agent right now and could make a lot of sense for the Vikings.
