The MLB trade deadline is coming quickly and this is the time for contenders to make the final additions to their rosters in hopes of bringing home a World Series title. As it turns out, the need for pitching is evident, and guys like Max Scherzer and Jose Berrios have been a couple of names mentioned on the market. Albeit, there is a veteran pitcher who might be available and able to contribute for MLB teams down the stretch.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Cole Hamels is set to throw a showcase and should have plenty of interest.

This might be a gentle surprise, considering Hamels has made just one appearance in two years, but he is healthy and ready to get back on the mound at the MLB level.

He made one start for the Atlanta Braves in 2020 and went just 3.1 innings. The year before he went 7-7 with a 3.81 ERA for the Chicago Cubs and could be a valuable asset for a team looking for arms.

Among some of the MLB contenders that could use pitching are the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers have placed Clayton Kershaw on the IL and are without Dustin May for the season and now Trevor Bauer for the immediate future until his sexual assault allegations are resolved.

Hamels can certainly still hurl it, and if he throws well on July 16, he could sign a major league deal and make his return before the end of the month.
