They have been giving up a ton of runs and although they have a potent lineup, it's not nearly enough to consistently win ballgames. The Angels are now 38-41 and 9.5 games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West standings.
The Angels have been one of the best offensive clubs in all of baseball as they're currently averaging 4.84 runs per game this season. Their offensive numbers have taken a slight dip on the road, but the Angels have scored 10 runs through the first two games of this series. With Mike Trout currently on the injured list, it's been up to Shohei Ohtani to anchor this lineup, which he has excelled in doing. The two-way superstar belted two more home runs on Tuesday night. He now has a league-leading 28 home runs on the season.
Los Angeles will hand the ball to the two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani for the third game of this series. Ohtani is having a masterful season on the bump with a 3-1 record and 2.58 ERA through 11 starts. He has struck out a whopping 82 batters over 59.1 innings of work. Ohtani has gone two-straight starts with one earned run allowed over six innings.
Why The Yankees Could Cover The Spread
The New York Yankees finally got back into the winning column after getting swept by the Red Sox over the weekend and dropping the series opener against the Angels on Monday. The Yankees put up an impressive 11 runs on three home runs in Tuesday's 11-5 victory, which was a huge relief for a club whose season is already in jeopardy. New York is now 1-4 in their last five games and 5-2 in their last seven home games.
New York's offense has been really struggling this season as they are averaging just 4.06 runs per game this season. They've been slightly better at home, but still well short of what they've been over the past few seasons. Luckily for New York, the Angels lack of pitching has been helpful as the Yankees have averaged close to six runs per game over the last 10 head-to-head matchup's. Although I can't ignore what the Yankees did at the plate on Tuesday night, I'm not confident that they'll be able to replicate that performance against Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani has been devastating and now has a matchup against a very strikeout prone team. Los Angeles has been better at the plate and has a huge advantage in the pitching matchup as well. New York's struggles have been very alarming and until they show me an ability to sustain success, it will be hard to side with them.
