Jose Berrios gets the call for the Blue Jays, while Lance Lynn goes to the hill for the White Sox.

Jose Berrios has a 4.65 ERA, and the frustrating part of this picture for the Blue Jays is that they know Berrios can be great. Sometimes, he is, but when he isn't sharp, he unravels. Berrios has gone through a roller-coaster year. He has flourished in brief periods of time but has been painfully inconsistent.

Berrios pitched to an 11.81 ERA in his first two starts of the season. Then he thrived in his next three starts (17 2/3 innings, four runs allowed). Berrios began the month of May with two face-plants (11 runs allowed in 10 innings over two starts). Then he pitched a seven-inning shutout, followed by a quality start (6 1/3 innings, three runs allowed). He finished May with another six-run disaster in 2 1/3 innings versus the Angels on May 29. Then in June, Berrios has righted the ship, throwing 22 innings and allowing only six runs.

Berrios has a Jekyll-and-Hyde profile. Of his 13 starts, his six worst encompassed 24 innings and resulted in 27 runs allowed. His seven best starts out of 13 have produced 47 2/3 innings pitched and just 10 runs allowed, which is a sub-2.00 ERA. He has a low floor and a high ceiling, a large deviation between his best and worst iterations. Developing consistency is the key for this promising pitcher.

Lance Lynn has made only one appearance this year after coming back from injury. He gave up three runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings last week against the Tigers. Lynn was a central part of the White Sox's division championship-winning season last year. He is a proven veteran who has helped several teams in his big-league career. His credentials are substantial. The mystery surrounding Lynn is simply his health and his ability to find rhythm after a long layoff. His second start after his return could produce a much better start than what we saw in Detroit last week, but it's really hard to assume or expect an immediate return to sharpness and precision. It's certainly possible, but it is ultimately something which is hard to predict.

Why The Blue Jays Could Cover the Spread

Coming back from 8-3 down in the sixth inning to snap the Yankees' nine-game winning streak on Sunday is the kind of win which makes a playoff contender such as the Blue Jays believe they can compete with the best on even terms. If you followed the Blue Jays last year, their rough and bumpy season — which was heading nowhere — took a sharp positive turn after a game in which Lourdes Gurriel hit a grand slam and Marcus Semien hit a game-winning three-run homer to turn an 8-2 deficit into an 11-10 win over the Athletics. Toronto won 10 of 11 after that win to make a serious push for the American League wild card.

Sunday, Gurriel hit a grand slam and Teoscar Hernandez hit a game-winning three-run homer to turn an 8-3 deficit into a 10-9 win. If history repeats itself this year, the Jays will use Sunday's win as a catapult.

Also, Jose Berrios, though inconsistent, has more upside at this point than a rusty Lance Lynn.

Why The White Sox Could Cover the Spread

Lance Lynn could pitch better now that he has one start under his belt. Also, the bad version of Jose Berrios could show up. He has not been consistent and is prone to a face-plant once every few starts. Beyond that, the White Sox know they need to start winning games against teams in playoff position if they want to chase down the American League wild card. The White Sox will show more urgency here.

Final Blue Jays-White Sox Prediction & Pick

It's a stay-away game, since we don't know what form Lance Lynn will display. If you insist on making a pick, Berrios and the confident Jays are probably the better play.

Final Blue Jays-White Sox Prediction & Pick: Blue Jays -1.5
