The Arizona Diamondbacks will begin a four-game series against the Los Angels Dodgers at Chavez Ravine on Monday night. It's time to continue our MLB odds coverage with a Diamondbacks-Dodgers prediction and pick.

The Diamondbacks lost 3-2 to the Chicago Cubs to lose two of three to Chicago this past weekend. Now, they head to Los Angeles to play a division rival that they only trail by four games in the NL West.

The Dodgers avoided a four-game sweep by rallying to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. Gavin Lux drove home the game-winning walk-off double to seal the victory. Monday, the Dodgers host the Diamondbacks and look to increase their first-place lead in the NL West.

Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover The Spread

Arizona will turn to Madison Bumgarner on the hill. He is 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA over seven starts in 2022. Bumgarner is coming off a stellar start in which he tossed 6 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs and six hits in a 9-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Now, he faces the best hitting team in baseball, and it is a team he is very familiar with. Bumgarner has faced the Dodgers plenty of times in his career, compiling a 15-15 record with a 2.77 ERA in 38 appearances against the boys in blue. He will look to secure the series-opening win and will look for some help from his offense.

Christian Walker and Daulton Varsho make the Arizona offense hum, though there are some weaknesses here. Walker has six home runs with 14 RBI and 15 runs scored. However, he is also batting .203. Varsho has hit six home runs and 16 RBI but is batting .254. The Diamondbacks are 10th in home runs but 29th in batting average and 24th in on-base percentage. When Arizona scores any runs, it is often through the long ball. Walker is hitting .234 with 11 home runs, 29 RBI, and 23 runs through 52 career games against Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Varsho is hitting .154 with two home runs, seven RBI, and eight runs in 24 career games against the Dodgers.

Arizona took two of three from Los Angeles last month because the pitching performed well, allowing eight runs over three games. The Diamondbacks will need to repeat that effort to take this series at Chavez Ravine.

The Diamondbacks will cover the spread if Bumgarner can deliver an excellent start. Additionally, the Diamondbacks need Walker and Varsho to power their offense. They may need to take the Philly approach from Saturday, where the Phillies blasted four home runs.

Why The Dodgers Could Cover The Spread

Los Angeles will turn to Tony Gonsolin for the opener. Gonsolin pitched well last week, allowing no earned runs on one hit with five strikeouts over five innings. However, he struggled with control and walked four batters. Gonsolin will look to rectify that issue Monday and pitch longer in the game. He has some help from a loaded offense that includes Mookie BettsFreddie FreemanMax Muncy, and Cody Bellinger

Betts is hitting .292 with 12 home runs, 30 RBI, and 32 runs scored over 35 games against Arizona. In addition to Betts, Freeman is at .344 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI over 63 games vs. the Diamondbacks. However, Bellinger and Muncy have been boom-or-bust against Arizona. Muncy is clipping .241 with eight home runs, 23 RBI, and 30 runs in 55 career games against the Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, Bellinger is batting .243 with 15 home runs and 34 RBI in 65 career games against Arizona.

The Dodgers are 10th in the majors in batting average, second in on-base percentage, second in runs scored, and 15th in home runs. Los Angeles is very adept at getting on base through any means possible. Now, the Dodgers must figure out Bumgarner and put pressure on him to have an advantage in this game.

The Dodgers will cover the spread if Gonsolin can give them a quality start and shorten his pitch counts. Also, Los Angeles needs Gonsolin to go deeper to take some pressure off a tired bullpen that has had more work lately after the injuries to Clayton Kershaw and Andrew Heaney. Additionally, the Dodgers need their sluggers to hit consistently. Los Angeles struggled to do anything at the plate for the majority of Sunday's game and throughout Saturday's matchup against the Phillies. Now, the Dodgers have to step up and take down the Diamondbacks to start the series on a high note.

Final Diamondbacks-Dodgers Prediction & Pick

The Dodgers came close to losing all four games at home to the Phillies. Next, they hope to avoid that fate against a division rival that could inch closer to them if they could win the series. The Dodgers got their mojo back Sunay night and Gonsolin can outduel Bumgarner if he limits the walks. Rolling with the Dodgers to take this and cover.

Final Diamondbacks-Dodgers Prediction & Pick: Dodgers: -1.5 (-108)
