The Arizona Diamondbacks take on the San Diego Padres. Check out our MLB odds series for our Diamondbacks Padres prediction and pick.

Zac Gallen gets the start for the Diamondbacks, while Sean Manaea goes to the bump for the Padres.

Zac Gallen has a 2.91 ERA. Through his first seven starts — going through a May 19 game against the Cubs in which he allowed one run in five innings — Gallen had a 1.14 ERA. He was putting up Cy Young-level numbers, though the one concern was that he wasn't pitching very deep into games. Then he gave up six runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Royals on May 24. Gallen has allowed six runs in two of his last five starts. He has lost the relentless consistency he displayed in the first one and a half months of the season. It will be fascinating to see how — and if — Gallen can steady himself and keep his ERA under three runs for the rest of the season.

Sean Manaea has a 3.95 ERA. His ERA was 1.42 through three starts. Then, on April 24, the Dodgers rocked him for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings, sending his ERA to 3.47. Since then, Manaea has pitched at an ERA of roughly four runs. His ERA for the month of May was 4.50. His ERA for June so far is 3.71. Manaea has allowed three or more runs in seven of his last nine starts. However, on June 8, he went seven strong innings and allowed only one earned run against the powerful and deep New York Mets, showing that signs of a turnaround might exist. Can he get back to that level of performance??

Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover the Spread

The absence of Manny Machado from the Padres' lineup is impossible to ignore. The Padres scored a modest four runs on Monday against the Diamondbacks, but that required a number of other San Diego players to step up. That's not going to happen in every game San Diego plays as long as Machado is removed from the batting order. Zac Gallen is still a sub-three ERA pitcher. He can put the clamps on this diminished Padre lineup and give the Diamondbacks the leverage they need to win. Also, Sean Manaea has simply not been as good as San Diego hoped for this season. He certainly hasn't been as good as Gallen through two months of play this year.

Why The Padres Could Cover the Spread

After winning Monday night, the Padres know that they can do just fine without Machado against the Diamondbacks — not against an elite team, but certainly against Arizona. The Diamondbacks overachieved in April and early May but have since fallen back and played more like the team everyone expected to see this season: a not-very-good one. The Diamondbacks have decent pitching, but their offense goes through prolonged slumps, and the Padres were able to shut them down on Monday in Game 1 of this series.

Final Diamondbacks-Padres Prediction & Pick

With Manny Machado out, the Padres are not their normal selves. Keep in mind that Fernando Tatis is already out and has still not returned to this team. This makes Tuesday a stay-away game for bettors. If you insist on making a pick in this game, though, you might as well take the D-Backs plus a run and a half, given how unlikely it is that the Padres will score a lot of runs.
