The San Diego Padres will attempt to avoid a series sweep as they face off with the Colorado Rockies in the finale at Coors Field. It's time to continue our MLB odds coverage with a Padres-Rockies prediction and pick.

The Rockies edged out the Padres 5-4 on Saturday night. Colorado got off on the right track when CJ Cron clobbered a two-run bomb to left field to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead. It was the 14th home run in 2022 for Cron. Later, the Padres trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning when Manny Machado approached the plate. Machado crushed a two-run blast to left field to swing the lead back to San Diego. It was his 12th in 2022, giving the Padres a 3-2 lead. Colorado trailed 4-2 in the latter half of the fifth when Charlie Blackmon came up to bat with a runner on. Blackmon blasted a pitch into the second deck seats in right to tie the game. It was his 11th in 2022.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning when Ryan McMahon stepped up to the plate. Then, McMahon blasted a 1-2 pitch into the right-field seats to give the Rockies the late lead. The Padres put two runners on base in the ninth but failed to tie the game. The Padres are 41-26 and in second place in the NL West. Meanwhile, the Rockies are 29-37 and in fifth place in the NL West. The Rockies have won nine games in a row against the Padres at Coors Field, dating back to last season.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

The Padres will roll with former Cy-Young winner Blake Snell on the hill. Snell is 0-3 with a 5.04 ERA. He tossed six innings in his last start, allowing two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Snell has had an up-and-down season in his five starts since coming back from an injury. He has hit six innings just twice and allowed two earned runs in each game. Snell will face the Rockies for the second weekend in a row and hopes for similar results. He has a solid bullpen to rely on.

The Padres bullpen ranks ninth in team ERA. However, the bullpen allowed the winner last night, two the previous night, and one earned run the game before. The bullpen has not pitched a spotless game since Tuesday. Thus, San Diego's relievers look to bounce back and perform better toward the end.

The Padres are 14th in batting average, 10th in on-base percentage, sixth in runs, 24th in home runs, and 19th in slugging percentage. San Diego continues to wait for the return of Fernando Tatis from injury but has some healthy alternatives. Machado has 12 home runs and 46 RBIs while Jurickson Profar has belted eight home runs and 36 RBIs. Both must step up today.

The Padres will cover the spread if the pitching can keep the ball in the yard. San Diego needs the Cy-Young version of Snell and not the inconsistent version that struggles with command occasionally. Likewise, they need the bats to attack early and build a lead.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

The Rockies will go with Antonio Senzatela on the mound. Senzatela is 2-3 with a 4.79 ERA. He lasted six innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in his previous outing. Senzatela has consistently hit six innings over his past two starts. Likewise, he has allowed three or fewer earned runs in three of four outings. It enabled him to lower his ERA from 5.40 to 4.79. However, he still has work to do, but also has a great offense behind him.

The Rockies rank second in the majors in batting average, seventh in on-base percentage, 10th in runs, 21st in home runs, and 14th in slugging percentage. Cron has been a star, smashing 17 home runs and 51 RBIs. Becoming a member of the Rockies has salvaged his career, and he is putting up career numbers. Also, Blackmon remains steady with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs. The Rockies will go as far as their bats take them.

The Rockies will cover the spread if Senzatela can give them five to six quality innings. Additionally, Cron and Blackmon must continue their torrid stretch and power the Rockies to the sweep.

Final Padres-Rockies Prediction & Pick

Expecting both teams to combine for 13 runs is difficult. Snell may not be the ace he once was, but he still can pitch dominantly. Likewise, Senzatela has pitched better. This game feels more like a 7-4 game than a 9-7 game. Expect the under to barely prevail.

Final Padres-Rockies Prediction & Pick: Under 12.5 (-110)
