Nick Martinez gets the call for the Padres, while German Marquez takes the hill for the Rockies.

Nick Martinez has a 3.74 ERA. He hasn't been bad, and he hasn't been spectacular. He keeps the Padres competitive and doesn't let games spin out of control, but he also doesn't dominate. He has allowed more than three runs in just two of his 11 starts this year. He has only one scoreless appearance. He has generally stayed away from the big inning, but with 25 walks allowed and 52 hits conceded in 55 1/3 innings, there are always baserunners on when Martinez is pitching. He has to make sure he doesn't regress. To his credit, he has been able to do that so far this year. He posted a 4.12 ERA in April, 3.81 in May, and 2.79 through two starts in June.

German Marquez has a 6.09 ERA. That ERA has been above six runs since May 3, but Marquez is finally chopping it down. He has been legitimately good in his last two starts, throwing a total of 13 innings against the Giants and Padres and allowing a combined five runs. Has this underperforming pitcher turned the corner? If he can contain the Padres for a second time in a week, it might be time to say that he has figured out what bothered him over the previous two months. Marquez is a big reason the Rockies have failed to gain traction this season. If he can turn the corner, this team can make a legitimate run at the .500 mark in the second half of the season.

Why The Padres Could Cover the Spread

The Padres are having a fantastic season. They are first in the National League West despite not having Fernando Tatis in their lineup. Everything has come together for the Padres, who are getting the pitching, hitting and defense the San Francisco Giants received last year when they defeated the Dodgers in the N.L. West. San Diego's mixture feels reminiscent of that, especially since this is happening without Tatis. Resourceful, deep, and blessed by big performances from unheralded players who don't generate the headlines, the Padres have overachieved under new manager Bob Melvin. They are a far better team than the Rockies. They should be able to take care of business, and more precisely, they should be able to win at Coors Field. It defies the odds that they're 2-8 in their last 10 in Denve./ The odds need to even out.

Why The Rockies Could Cover the Spread

After struggling for so much of the season, German Marquez seems to have found himself. He is pitching better and getting out of jams. He contained the Padres last weekend and is finally performing with confidence. Given that the Padres are 2-8 in their last 10 games at Coors Field and are 10-14 against Colorado over the last two seasons, the Rockies have to feel confident about this matchup.

Final Padres-Rockies Prediction & Pick

It's really crazy that the Padres can't win in Coors Field. That seems bound to change at some point. Take San Diego.

Final Padres-Rockies Prediction & Pick: Padres -1.5
