The Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants will finish up a three-game series on Sunday afternoon. It's time to continue our MLB odds series and make a Pirates-Giants prediction and pick.

Heading into this series, the Giants had one of the best records in baseball while the Pirates had one of the worst. San Francisco was heavily favored in each of the last two games, but Pittsburgh came away with two victories. The Pirates are looking to complete the sweep against one of the best teams in MLB, something that nobody expected when this series started. The Giants are clinging to a slim two-game lead in the NL West, so getting swept by a terrible team would be absolutely disastrous.

Here's how the oddsmakers have set the lines for Sunday's game.

Pittsburgh Pirates +1 1/2 (-125)

San Francisco Giants -1 1/2 (+105)

Over 7 1/2 runs (-122)

Under 7 1/2 runs (+102)

Why The Pirates Could Cover The Spread

The Pirates may own one of the worst records in baseball, but they haven't been terrible lately. Pittsburgh is 5-5 over the last 10 games, a better mark than usual. The offense has been particularly impressive over that span, scoring more than five runs in six of those games. That hot streak at the plate could continue today against opposing pitcher Alex Wood.

Wood's season-long stats look pretty good, but his last seven starts have been much less inspiring. The lefty owns a 4.17 ERA and a 1.123 WHIP over that span. Neither number is terrible, but both indicate that Wood has been hittable over his last seven starts.

The Pirates will send one of their better starters to the mound Sunday in JT Brubaker. Brubaker currently sports a 4.68 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He has usually given the Pirates a chance to hang around in his starts, so covering the spread with Brubaker on the mound is certainly possible.

Why The Giants Could Cover The Spread

As you can probably imagine, the stats make a much more compelling case for the Giants than they do for the Pirates in this one. San Francisco possesses one of the best offenses in the MLB. They rank in the top 10 in OBP, slugging percentage, and OPS. The Giants are also one of the most disciplined teams in the league, making pitchers work hard to get through the lineup. They should have no trouble hitting Brubaker in this series finale.

Brubaker's numbers on the season are decent, but his recent stretch of starts has been brutal. Over his last seven appearances, the righty has an ERA of 6.08 and a WHIP of 1.22. San Francisco should be able to capitalize on Brubaker's recent cold streak and score some early runs.

Giants starter Alex Wood may be on his own little cold streak, but there's good reason to believe he'll pitch well in this one. Wood has already faced the Pirates once this season, pitching six innings of one-run ball. Another helpful factor is that the Pirates hit left-handed pitching slightly worse than they do right-handed pitching. Pittsburgh's batting average, OBP, and OPS all take slight dips against lefties.

Final Pirates-Giants Prediction & Pick

It's just too hard to bet on the Pirates in this one. They've pulled off two straight upsets, but the Giants should fend off a sweep from one of the worst teams in baseball. San Francisco also has a huge pitching advantage, so this should be a relatively easy win. The Giants' offense will also be able to shell Brubaker early, so the spread looks pretty good here.

FINAL PICK: San Francisco Giants -1 1/2 (+105)
