The Chicago White Sox take on the New York Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader. Check out our MLB odds series for our White Sox Yankees prediction and pick.

Michael Kopech gets the start for the White Sox in Game 2, while Luis Severino gets the call for the Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball.

Michael Kopech has a 1.54 ERA. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of his seven starts. He has allowed more than two runs only once. He has allowed one or no runs in five of his starts. He has given the White Sox his best in a season when Chicago has struggled mightily to score and get high-end performances from the back end of its bullpen. Kopech can only continue to do what he is doing. He needs help from his teammates, an undeniable fact for anyone considering a White Sox Yankees prediction.

Luis Severino has a 3.63 ERA over seven starts. His starts can be divided into two subgroups. Four of Severino's starts have encompassed 18 2/3 innings. Severino gave up 13 runs in that span. In his other three starts, Severino allowed just two runs in 16 innings pitched. Which iteration of Severino shows up for Sunday Night Baseball will influence how you process a White Sox Yankees pick based on the current MLB odds.

Why The White Sox Could Cover the Spread

The White Sox battled the Yankees hard on Saturday, falling behind 5-0 but then coming within one run of New York before falling short. That rally wasn't successful, but it did show the Sox won't back down against the red-hot Yankees. The White Sox have had a brutal first 40 games of their season, but that's merely one-fourth of the whole journey. This team has so many good, tough hitters that it will be hard to keep Chicago under wraps the whole year.

The pitching matchup also favors the White Sox. Michael Kopech has been terrific, and he is due for a little more run support. The odds of Kopech remaining strong are very high. The odds of him and other White Sox pitchers not getting run support as the season goes along are much lower.

Why The Yankees Could Cover the Spread

The Yankees continue to soar. They enter Sunday 29-10. If they win Game 1 of the doubleheader (Johnny Cueto for the White Sox versus Jameson Taillon for the Yankees), they will become the first MLB team to win 30 games this season. Even if they lose, this second game on Sunday Night Baseball would give them the chance to hit 30 first. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets have 27 wins and won't be able to reach 30 for a few more days. The Yankees didn't hit very well in the first few weeks of the season but have been crushing the ball of late, including on Saturday in a seven-run barrage highlighted by a D.J. LeMahieu grand slam. This is a hot team with supreme talent. There isn't a whole lot else to say other than that the White Sox have had a miserable season and haven't really earned a lot of trust to this point.

Final White Sox-Yankees Prediction & Pick

If the Yankees win Game 1, definitely lean into a White Sox pick, since Chicago will urgently need a split and an avoidance of a three-game weekend sweep loss. If the White Sox win Game 1, probably stay away from this game, but the pitching matchup still favors Chicago.

Final White Sox-Yankees Prediction & Pick: White Sox +1.5
