New York, on the other hand, has been surging of late and absolutely must have at least two games in this series to stick around.

Why The Yankees Could Cover The Spread
The New York Yankees have been one of the most exciting teams to watch since the All-Star Break. Many of their key players including Aaron Judge have missed every game since the break because of health and safety protocols and the replacements have played phenomenal. Guys like Greg Allen have stepped in and excelled with the opportunity presented. The Yankees are now five games over .500 and 4.5 games back of the Oakland Athletics for the second wild card spot. They've won four of their last five and will have to break their recent slump against the rival Red Sox.
New York will turn to right-hander Gerrit Cole as they look to even the series. The Yankees ace is 10-4 with a 2.63 ERA through 19 starts. He has struck out 158 batters and has a 0.94 WHIP through 120 innings of work this season. The Yankees starter has returned to form with a complete game shutout against the Astros and six innings of one-run ball against Boston in his last two starts. He struck out a combined 23 batters over his past two starts and will look to continue his recent success in his second straight start against Boston.

The Boston Red Sox continue to dominate this season as they have been one of the best teams in all of baseball. Boston is 21 games over .500 and has a one game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the division lead. The Red Sox offense has led the way with 5.40 runs per game at Fenway Park this season. Boston has been red hot with wins in 10 of their last 12 home games to date. They are 5-0 over their last five home games against the Yankees as well. The Red Sox have scored a combined 25 runs over their last three games and will look to stay hot against one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Boston will turn to left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez as they look to take control of this series. Rodriguez has mostly struggled this season with a 7-5 record and 5.19 ERA through 18 starts. He has struck out 112 batters and has a 1.33 WHIP through 95.1 innings of work. The southpaw has shown some flashes of life with at least five innings of shutout ball in two of his last three starts to date. Rodriguez is 8-6 with a 3.68 ERA in 20 career starts against the Yankees coming in.

The New York Yankees have played with a ton of life lately and had their fare share of chances in the series opener. I expect the Yankees to bounce back behind another dominant start from their ace. Eduardo Rodriguez has been effective lately, but has many flaws that this surging Yankee lineup can exploit. The Yankees are clearly playing with a sort of desperate energy, which I believe will serve them well down the stretch. Look for New York to even the series on Friday evening.
