The New York Yankees have already made a massive splash this offseason with the addition of superstar starting pitcher Gerrit Cole. While they have spent a lot of money already this offseason, that does not mean that they are done trying to add talent. Now, the Yankees appear to be dipping into the trade market.
According to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Yankees and Chicago Cubs have had trade discussions centered around outfielder Kyle Schwarber. The report does say that the two sides have not found any major momentum and that nothing is close between the two teams.
The Yankees’ interest in Schwarber is not new; they have been talking to the Cubs about him since at least 2016, sources said. The nature of the latest conversations also is not new. The teams are talking, yes, but again that’s all it is — talk.
Schwarber would be an intriguing addition for the Yankees, or any other team in the American League for that matter. He is currently playing left field most of the time for the Cubs and simply isn't good defensively in that role. His bat keeps him in the lineup, but a role as a designated hitter would be ideal.
Last season with the Cubs, Schwarber ended up batting .250 to go along with 38 home runs and 92 RBI's. Those numbers would look very good in the Yankees' lineup.
All of that being said, there is no guarantee the Cubs and New York come to a deal. It is certainly something to keep an eye on moving forward though.
