Neither Madison Bumgarner nor Zack Wheeler were traded at the deadline, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Bumgarner had long been considered a top potential trade chip in baseball in the lead-up to the deadline, but thanks to a recent surge by the San Francisco Giants that has vaulted them back into playoff contention, they ultimately decided to hang on to the left-hander.

As for Wheeler, the New York Mets made a strange decision by swinging a deal for Toronto Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman when most expected them to sell. It seems the Mets still think they can contend for a Wild Card spot this season, which is why they decided to hold on to Wheeler.

Both Bumgarner and Wheeler will be free agents at season's end, so the Giants and Mets opting to keep their respective pitchers is obviously a bit risky. However, Bumgarner has shown no indication of wanting out of San Francisco.

Through 23 starts this year, Bumgarner has gone 6-7 with a 3.74 ERA while allowing 132 hits and striking out 140 batters over 139 2/3 innings of work.

The 29-year-old has spent his entire career with the Giants, making his big-league debut in 2010. Since then, Bumgarner has helped San Francisco win three World Series titles and has made four All-Star teams.

Meanwhile, Wheeler has made 20 starts in 2019 and has gone 7-6 with a 4.71 ERA, surrendering 124 hits and fanning 137 hitters across 124 1/3 frames. The 29-year-old has an extensive injury history and missed all of 2015 and 2016 due to elbow issues.

He made his big-league debut with the Mets back in 2013.
