Starling Marte and the Miami Marlins are on the verge of a breakup after they failed to come to an agreement on a contract extension. That means it's likely that Marte, 32, gets moved ahead of the July 31st MLB Trade Deadline and then hits free agency in the offseason. And according to Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, the red-hot San Francisco Giants could be one of the main teams who pursue the outfielder:

According to sources, one of the key teams to watch in the pursuit of Marte is the San Francisco Giants.

San Francisco has a gaping hole in center field, and have the prospect capital Miami would be looking for in a return. While Marte and his expiring deal alone would likely not be enough to land top center fielder prospect Heliot Ramos, he could be a name to watch if Miami is willing to add players to the deal who can put the Giants over the top at the deadline.

The Giants have been one of the biggest surprises in the big leagues this season as they currently lead a very competitive NL West. They've slugged the second-most homers in the majors and have absolutely no problems generating offense.

In Marte, San Fran would be getting a two-time Gold Glove winner and one-time All-Star who plays tremendous defense and has a cannon for an arm. While his power numbers at the dish are down this season, the former Pittsburgh Pirates star is still hitting .290 with seven bombs in 56 games.

The Giants are poised to make a deep run in October and if they do end up acquiring Starling Marte, it's only going to help their case even more.
