The MLB trade deadline has officially kicked off just a couple of days after the All-Star Game. The Chicago Cubs made the first deal of the trade season by sending outfielder Joc Pederson to the Atlanta Braves in a rather shocking move. In fact, the deal was just an hour after Jon Heyman reported that the Braves would be “sellers.”
Well, now there seems to be another report, this time from MLB Insider Jeff Passan, about the state of the National League East as a whole.
The National League East is wild right now. Not only is sub-.500 Atlanta in add mode, sources tell ESPN that Philadelphia and Washington, at least for the time being, are acting like buyers as well.
Because the Mets haven't run away with the division, others see vulnerability.

Surprise, surprise.
The Braves kicked things off by getting Joc, and the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals are looking to buy, buy, and buy some more. At the MLB All-Star break, the New York Mets held a 3.5 game lead over the Phillies, with the Nationals a half-game behind them and the Braves two games back of the Nationals.
Truth be told, a couple of wins or a little streak of five or six games could dramatically change the division race, so it isn't entirely surprising that these teams are doing anything they can to make the MLB playoffs.
The deadline should be full of surprises, and after the Braves went from sellers to buyers in a couple of hours, who knows what will happen in the coming weeks.
