Why Seattle Could Win This Game
As said in the beginning, this Sounders team will remain written in US football history. Seattle are the first team from the MLS that has won the CONCACAF Champions League and they will be representing the region in the Club World Cup, possibly even playing against Real Madrid. Domestically, winning the Champions League clearly left its toll on Seattle, but they still manage to be around the playoffs.
Their biggest chance of winning this game is the resilience they have shown to play on two fronts. Obviously, the MLS front has not always worked out, as Seattle did link three losses in a row, but they have bounced back since. They may be tired, as Seattle had to play eight games to win the CONCACAF Champions League, but the Sounders are still fighting, which is a true sign of their quality.
Lastly, we can take into consideration their form as well. Seattle has three wins out of the last four and that three-game losing streak looks to be behind them. In that time, they beat Charlotte, Minnesota, and Houston, and all three teams are above the Sounders in the standings. Clearly, they have the quality to tussle with better teams, so Vancouver should not be a huge issue for the CONCACAF Champions.
Why Vancouver Could Win This Game
When it comes to this team, the Vancouver Whitecaps are having a solid season, one with many ups and many downs. They played well versus some great teams, like beating Real Salt Lake in the last match, but also lost to the Portland Timbers at home, a game they should be winning. Still, the highs were good enough to warrant Vancouver a chance in any encounter, including this one.
Many things go against Vancouver, but one thing that could be a major reason for them to win this game is tradition. They have been very poor playing in Seattle, so this team might be looking to turn that around. Speaking about revenge might be too strong, as these teams are not huge rivals, but this Vancouver team has a chance to turn a losing tradition around and finally win a game in Seattle.
In terms of the biggest reason, however, it would be their form and context around it. Vancouver, like Seattle, won three out of their last four games. However, all three wins came with penalties, and two of them came in the extra time of the second half. Clearly, if they are able to get results when playing badly, the Whitecaps can hope to play well and get all the three points in this match.
