The Egyptian national’s rise to fame has been nothing short of amazing, with the most successful — and the most profitable — stint of his career coming during his time with English outfit Liverpool FC. Salah was born on June 15, 1992 in Nagrig, Egypt. By the time he was 18, he was already a professional footballer. His first ever team was El Mokawloon of the Egyptian Premier League. It didn’t take long before he caught the eye of scouts from more prestigious clubs in Europe.
Not more than two years later, Salah made the move to Sweden to play for FC Basel. He made an immediate impact for the squad as soon as he arrived, helping the team to the Swiss Super League title in his very first season. Salah also made quite a mark in the UEFA Champions League, scoring against English side Chelsea, which happened to be his future employer, in the semi-finals of the European tournament.
After just two seasons with Basel, Chelsea swooped in on Salah, signing him on a huge five and a half year deal worth $23 million. This was Salah’s first big-money deal of his career, and at just 21 years of age, he was already earning roughly $25,000 on a weekly basis.
Salah did not exactly live up to the high expectations many had on him while at Chelsea, and the fact that there was an influx of a myriad of other high-profile stars entering the squad also did not help his cause. In 2015, the London-based club loaned him out to Fiorentina in Italy for the next season.
This was followed by another loan spell to Roma, another squad playing in the Italian Serie A. By the end of his first season with Roma, the club decided to make his move more permanent, opting to purchase his rights from Chelsea for a hefty price tag of $17 million. At this point Salah was earning roughly $51,000 per week.
Salah found his form in the Italian capital, and this led to interest from Liverpool. The talented forward made his return to England in 2017. By this time he was already one of the biggest prospects throughout Europe, which required Liverpool to part ways with a whopping $58 million to secure his permanent transfer from Roma.
