Following the solid start he's had to his professional career so far, Montverde Academy has decided to retire the high school basketball jersey of one of their best basketball players ever — D'Angelo Russell.

The ceremony happened on Wednesday, when the Los Angeles Lakers point guard became the first player in the school's history to have his jersey and number retired.

Russell became heavily recruited after his stellar high school career back in 2015, where he won two national championships, playing alongside Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons as well. A number of colleges and universities tried to bring him to their fold until he ultimately chose Ohio State, where he spent a year before declaring for the NBA Draft.

Now with the Lakers, the 21-year-old is hoping he can be one of the team's cornerstones in the future, as they try to complete their rebuild and once again become a championship contender. In two NBA seasons, Russell has averaged 14.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.

If he can continue his development and further mature as a player, there will be no doubt he can be a future star in the league, which will make Montverde Academy even more proud of him.
