The Detroit Lions don't have a very proud history and a big reason for that has been because of some heartbreaking moments at the wrong time. Missed field goals and successful hail mary's by the opponents have led to years of heartbreak.

Let's take a look at the most heartbreaking moments in Lions history.

Aaron Rodgers walk-off

The most recent play on this list happened on December 3rd, 2015 on Thursday night football. The Lions had won three games in a row and were looking to make a playoff push heading into their game with the Green Bay Packers. They had a 20-point halftime lead, but they let the Packers hang around. On the last play of the game, a controversial face-mask was called on Lions defensive end Devin Taylor, which gave Rodgers one more untimed down.

On that untimed down, Rodgers hit one of his famous Hail Mary's that ended in a touchdown. The 2015 season was dead for Detroit after that play. One that many argue should have never happened.

Missed Field Goal ruins Lions dreams

The 1983 Lions team got out to a slow start to the season losing four of their first five games. They figured out something in Week 6 against the Packers to turn around their season. The Lions finished the regular season with a 9-7 record, which was good enough to win the NFC Central, their first division win since 1957.

The team's first-round matchup in the playoffs was against the San Francisco 49ers led by Joe Montana. Late in the fourth quarter, the Lions were winning before Montana threw a touchdown pass to give the 49ers a one-point lead.

The Lions didn't give up, driving into field goal range. Eddie Murray had a chance with five seconds left to win the game, but he missed a 44-yard kick, and the Lions were bounced out of the playoffs.

Packers break the Lions' heart

The 1993 Lions team looked to be special. The squad finished the 1993 regular season with a 10-6 record, good enough to win the NFC Central. The Lions played on wild-card weekend at home against the Packers. Detroit's offense was strong all game but it was the defense that let them down big. Packers quarterback Brett Favre hit Sterling Sharpe with 55 seconds left in the game to knock out the Lions. If Detroit's defense would have stepped up in that last minute, who knows what could have happened that season.

Detroit's 2014 season was a special one, at least during the regular season. The Lions clinched their first playoff berth since 2011, and there was once again hope that the team led by Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson could make a run during the playoffs. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, and it looked like a win in the playoffs was going to be possible.

The Lions didn't capitalize a couple of times during the games and let the Dallas Cowboys stick around. In the 4th quarter, the Cowboys scored ten points, and the Lions scored zero, enough for the Lions to be knocked out.

What is a catch?

One of the more confusing plays in NFL history happened in a regular season game in 2010. Late in the 4th quarter, Calvin Johson looked like he had done enough to secure a touchdown pass to secure a win over the pass. It was ruled an incomplete pass on the field and on review it was upheld. There is still controversy if that should have been a catch. But all it is for Detroit fans, is one of the most heartbreaking ways to lose a game.
