Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto is set to be the most coveted player heading into next month’s MLB trade deadline. The Nationals are reportedly open to offers for their superstar talent, and they are aiming high in such talks.

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal noted that based on his understanding from “multiple clubs,” the Nationals are asking for “four to five top young players” with a combination of prospects and major leaguers with low service time.

Rosenthal added that teams are not “offended” by the Nationals' asking price for Soto. More so, the Nationals are not pushing to negotiate on this matter, as they prefer to speak with teams that are willing to meet their trade demand for the two-time All-Star.

Soto’s future with the Nationals has been up in the air since he reportedly did not accept the 15-year, $440 million extension offer from the Nationals earlier this month. Had Soto signed off on the deal, the $29.3 million average annual value on the contract would have ranked him behind the likes of Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout ($35.5 million AAV) and Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager ($32 million AAV). This all came after Soto also turned down a 13-year, $350 million offer from the team ahead of the lockout.

Multiple teams have been linked with Soto as of late, including the New York Yankees and New York Mets. However, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman did recently note that both teams are not open to shipping off “their three top prospects plus more” in order to complete a blockbuster trade for Soto. For the Yankees, this would include talents such as shortstops Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, while catcher Francisco Alvarez may be a hitter who the Nationals would look to haul in from the Mets in such a trade.

Soto is set to be under team control for the next two years, as he will be arbitration-eligible for each of the upcoming pair of seasons. He has posted a .403 OBP to go along with 43 RBI recorded in 92 total games played so far in the 2022 season. He also sits at a 160 OPS+ — his lowest since the 2019 campaign (142).
